Major Twin Earthquakes Strike Northern Venezuela
Two powerful earthquakes (Mw 7.2 and Mw 7.5) struck northern Venezuela on 24 June 2026 within less than one minute. The earthquakes caused widespread structural collapse across Caracas and surrounding regions, severely damaging residential buildings, transportation infrastructure and public services. Rescue operations remain ongoing while hundreds of aftershocks continue to threaten weakened structures. Hundreds of fatalities have already been confirmed, with thousands feared trapped or missing according to preliminary USGS impact assessments. Emergency services are overwhelmed, airports and metro services have been partially suspended, and multiple countries have offered humanitarian assistance. Authorities have declared a national state of emergency while search-and-rescue operations continue.
